SYLVESTER MADU : NOLLYWOOD’S “TOUGH GUY”
Sylvester Madu is a Nigerian actor, producer, director, model, entrepreneur, and a television personality known for his work in the Nigerian film industry, often referred to as Nollywood.
Madu began his acting career at a very young age and by the time he joined the Nollywood industry, he quickly gained recognition for his talent and versatility. He has appeared in numerous Nollywood movies, showcasing his skills in both dramatic and action roles. With his strong screen presence and ability to portray diverse characters, he has become a popular figure in Nigerian cinema.
Sylvester Madu is popularly known for acting criminal, villain, armed robber, militant and hit man roles in movies alongside with other renowned Nollywood actors like; Emma Ehumadu, Junior Pope Odonwodo, Zubby Michael, Jim Iyke, Alaso Wariboko, Gentle Jack, Hanks Anuku, Jerry Amilo, Ernest Asuzu and many others. His performances have garnered praise for their intensity and authenticity, earning him a dedicated fan base.
In addition to acting, Sylvester Madu has also ventured into producing and directing. He has produced and directed several films, contributing to the growth and development of Nollywood. His work as a filmmaker has allowed him to explore different aspects of storytelling and showcase his creative vision.
Sylvester Madu has directed and acted in more than 250 Nollywood movies which include movies like; “Poverty”, “Power of Trust”, “Scent of Passion”, “Holy Cross”, “The Shepherd”, “The Generals”, “The Cat”, “Emotional Tears”, “Power of Love”, “The Family”, “The Illiterate”, “Tears of the Blind”, “Ogbanta the Family Hunter”, “Born to Suffer”, “Best Lovers”, “Royal Gangsters” amongst many others.
The actor recently landed in Cameroon to shoot a movie entitled “Abakwa” at the invitation of local filmmakers. The movie talks on the ills of drugs. Unfortunately, he narrowly escaped death as the movie was to take place in the Northwest region precisely Bamenda but the separatist fighters came and scattered the whole movie shoot. According to updates, at least three people were killed. He escaped in a military vehicle.
Outside of his film career, Sylvester Madu is also involved in philanthropic activities. He has been actively engaged in initiatives aimed at supporting and empowering young people in Nigeria, particularly in the areas of education and talent development.
Throughout his career, Sylvester Madu has received several nominations and awards for his contributions to the Nigerian film industry like; Most Promising Actor in Nigeria at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, Most Creative Movie Director in Nigeria, and Best Actor of the Year at the Africa Movie Academy Awards, Most Promising Actor in Nigeria at the City People Entertainment Awards, and many others. He continues to be an influential figure in Nollywood, both as an actor and a filmmaker, and his work has helped shape the landscape of Nigerian cinema.
Sylvester was born on January 11, 1975, in Anambra State, Nigeria. He completed his primary and secondary school education in Anambra State, Nigeria and obtained both his First Leaving Certificate and West African Senior School Certificate. After he completed, he went to the University of Maiduguri in Borno State in the northern part of Nigeria and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree.
