MATTHEW PERRY: A MOVIE ICON WHO HAS MET HIS MAKER
Matthew Perry was a Canadian-American actor, comedian, and playwright, best known for his role as Chandler Bing in the popular sitcom “Friends”. At a young age, Perry moved to Ottawa, Canada, to live with his dad and where he grew up. At the age of 15, he attended Buckley School, a college-preparatory school in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles to pursue his passion for acting and graduated in 1987. During his time in college, Perry made his acting debut in a television series called “240-Robert” in 1979 and later had his second role in “Second Chance” in 1987.
Perry’s breakthrough came in 1994 when he was cast as Chandler Bing in the hit sitcom “Friends”. He was the youngest member of the main cast at the age of 24. The show became immensely popular and ran for ten seasons, making Perry a household name. His portrayal of the sarcastic and lovable Chandler earned him critical acclaim and several award nominations. By 2002, he and his co-stars, Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt Le Blanc, and David Schwimmer were making $1 million per episode. He was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2002 for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.
While working on “Friends”, Perry also ventured into film acting. He starred in movies such as “Fools Rush In” (1997), “Almost Heroes” (1998), “Three To Tango” (1999), “The Whole Nine Yards” (2000), and its sequel “The Whole Ten Yards” (2004), “Serving Sara” (2002), “The Ron Clark Story” (2006), “Numb” (2007), “Birds of America” (2008), “17 Again” (2009) and many other movies in which he featured in, showcasing his versatility as an actor. In addition to his acting career, Perry had also written and produced several plays, including “The End of Longing” (2016-2017), which he also starred in. He also featured in a play which he did not write called “Sexual Perversity in Chicago” (2003).
Perry has also starred in several series and plays like; “240-Robert” (1979), “Friends” (1987-2004), “Just the Ten of Us” (1988), “Call Me Anna” (1990), “Beverly Hills” (1991), “L.A.X. 2194” (1994), “The Simpsons” (2001), “Scrubs” (2004), “The Good Wife” (2012-2013), “Web Therapy” (2015), “The Good Fight” (2017), “Friends: The Reunion” (2021) and many others. While these shows didn’t reach the same level of success as “Friends”, Perry’s talent and charisma continued to shine through.
With all these movies, he earned himself several renowned awards like Golden Globe Awards, Primetime Emmy Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, American Comedy Awards, Huading Awards, Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, People’s Choice Awards, Satellite Awards, Teen Choice Awards, TV Guide Awards, TV Land Awards and much more to show how incredibly talented he was.
However, behind the scenes, Perry struggled with substance abuse issues throughout his career. He has been open about his battles with addiction and has sought treatment multiple times. Despite these challenges, Perry continued to work on various television shows and films.
In recent years, Perry has focused on his personal life and health. He has been involved in various philanthropic endeavours, including supporting organizations that help people struggling with addiction. Perry also made headlines in 2021 when it was announced that a reunion special of “Friends” would be produced for HBO Max, bringing the original cast back together.
This renowned star was born on August 19, 1969, in Williamstown, Massachusetts, to Suzanne Marie Morrison and John Bennett Perry, a former model and actor. Perry has two sisters, Caitlin and Emily. Unfortunately, he recently died on Saturday 28th October 2023, at the age of 54. Sources say he was found dead on Saturday in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home. Investigations are still going on to know the cause of the actor’s death for nothing suspicious was found on the scene of death.
