DANIEL KAMWA: A GREAT MOVIE ICON IN HISTORY OF CAMEROON FILM INDUSTRY
Daniel Kamwa is a renowned Cameroonian actor, director, and producer. He was born on April 14, 1943, and is from Nkongsamba, Cameroon. Kamwa’s passion for storytelling and acting began at a young age. He studied theatre at the National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts in Paris, France, where he honed his skills and gained a deep understanding of the art form. Before completing his studies, he joined Peter Brook’s comedy troupe as an actor in 1968 before moving on to work in theatre, film and television and later on returned to Cameroon with a vision to promote African culture through film. He is considered one of the pioneers of the African film industry and has made significant contributions to the development of Cameroonian cinema.
In 1972, Kamwa directed his first film, “Boubou Cravate” and in 1976, he produced his first feature film “Pousse-Pousse” which explored the struggles of urban life in Cameroon. The film was a critical success and marked the beginning of his illustrious career. He continued to create thought-provoking films that tackled social issues and shed light on the African experience.
One of Kamwa’s most notable works is the film “Notre Fille” (1980) which was presented at the 12th Moscow Festival, “Vidéolire” (1980), “Totor” (1994), “Le Cercle des Pouvoirs” (1998) and other films. His movie “Mah Sa-Sah” opened the 21st FESPACO in 2009.
Throughout his career, Kamwa has been dedicated to promoting African cinema and providing opportunities for aspiring filmmakers.
