AYODEJI MAKUN : GOD FATHER OF NIGERIAN COMEDY
Ayodeji Richard Makun, popularly known as AY, is a Nigerian comedian, actor, writer, radio and TV presenter, producer, film director and entrepreneur. He was born on August 19, 1971, in Warri, Delta State, Nigeria. AY hails from Ifon, Ondo State, Nigeria. He received his education at Delta State University, Abraka, Delta State, Nigeria. He later on graduated as a Theatre arts student in 2003.
Before AY became popular, he came into the spotlight after being Alibaba Akporobome’s personal assistant and event manager. He wrote going “A.Y wire” as a guest columnist in The Sun Nigeria (a magazine) and Gbenga Adeyinka’s “Laugh Mattaz”.
AY began his career as a stand-up comedian in the late 1990s, performing at various comedy clubs and events. He gained prominence with his hilarious performances and unique style of comedy. His talent and hard work soon led him to become one of the most sought-after comedians in Nigeria.
Later on, AY organized his first major comedy show titled “AY Live”, which became a huge success and further solidified his place in the Nigerian entertainment industry. The show has since become an annual event and has featured top Nigerian and international artists. He also directs and acts in one of Nigeria’s sitcom entitled “AY’s Crib” with Alex Ekubo, Venita Akpofure, Buchi Franklin and Justice Nuagbe.
Aside from his successful career in comedy, AY has also ventured into acting. He has featured in several Nollywood movies, including “30 Days in Atlanta”, “A Trip to Jamaica”, “10 Days in Sun City”, “Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons” and many other renowned movies. AY’s acting skills have earned him numerous awards and nominations.
In addition to his comedy and acting career, AY is also a talented writer and has authored few books. His book titled “A. Y’s Diary: Just Laugh” was well-received by fans and readers.
AY is also an entrepreneur and the CEO of Corporate World Entertainment, a company that specializes in event planning and promotion. He has organized various successful events and shows both within Nigeria and internationally. He owns a club house, and is also an investor in stand-up comedy by paving a way for upcoming comedians through his AY “Open Mic Challenge”.
AY’s contributions to the Nigerian entertainment industry have not gone unnoticed. He has won numerous awards for his work, including the Comedian of the Year at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards and the Most Creative Entrepreneur of the Year at the African Entertainment Legend Awards and many other awards which he earned.
