QUEEN OF KATWE : DETERMINATION AND FOCUS LEADS TO SUCCESS
“Queen of Katwe” is an American biographical sports drama film released in 2016 and directed by Mira Nair and written by William Wheeler. The movie is based on the true story of Phiona Mutesi, a Ugandan chess prodigy from the slums of Katwe in Kampala.
The film follows Phiona Mutesi, played by Madina Nalwanga, who lives with her mother, Harriet who was played by Lupita Nyong’o, and her siblings in the impoverished neighbourhood of Katwe. Phiona’s life takes a transformative turn when she discovers a chess program run by a missionary named Robert Katende, portrayed by David Oyelowo.
Under Katende’s guidance, Phiona quickly develops a talent for chess and begins to compete in local and national tournaments. Despite facing numerous challenges, including poverty, gender biases, and societal expectations, Phiona’s determination and strategic thinking propel her forward.
