MINISTRY OF WATER AND ENERGY FIGHTS AGAINST SMUGGLING OF CONTRABAND FUEL
In a context marked by a rise in prices at the pump since February 2024, the practice of fraud and trafficking has increased in Cameroon. This has led the relevant departments of the Ministry of Water and Energy to step up their field operations, resulting in major seizures.
Between 13th and 15th March 2024, the Ministry of Water and Energy seized some 45,920 litres of fuel. “This was part of an operation to combat this scourge carried out by the National Brigade to Combat Fraud in Petroleum Products in Yaoundé and the surrounding area. This mission is being carried out on the instructions of the MINEE”,said the ministry.
In application of the instructions of the Minister for Water and Energy, Gaston Eloundou Essomba, relating to zero tolerance against fraudsters who deal in petroleum products, convincing results have been obtained in the field.
“The National Brigade to combat fraud involving petroleum products was on the ground from 13th to 15th March 2024 in the city of Yaoundé and its surrounding areas, particularly in the Efoulan neighborhood around SCDP, Nkoabang, on the Yaoundé-Nfou road, and also on the Yaoundé- Nkometou, the Brigade Nationale de Lutte contre la Fraude des Produits Pétroliers (National Brigade to Combat Fuel Fraud) routed the sellers of adulterated fuel by seizing two tanker trucks with a cargo of 4,480 litres of diesel at a service station. All the other illicit points of sale of contraband products were combed with a fine-tooth comb. 45920 litres of fuel were seized »,says MINEE.
The large quantity of fraudulent fuel seized was taken to the SCDP for further processing.
