Askia otherwise known as “Mami Bakala” is a Cameroonian rapper who has done remarkable tracks. Askia is a multi-award-winning artist who has gone through a lot in being a single parent and also to maintain her music career and maintain her name in the rap record of Cameroon. She was the only Cameroonian Rapper who was nominated at the AFRIMMA awards this year and she emerged the winner in the “Best Female Rap Act” at this year’s African Muzik Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA). In 8 years of her being in the music industry, this came as her first international award. Sources report that she was once nominated at the AFRIMMA 2020 but did not win but this year she bagged the award like a pro.

This ceremony (AFRIMMA) took place few days ago which happened to be September 17th 2023 at the prestigious Meyerson Symphony Centre in Dallas, Texas, USA. The ceremony was a three-day event with the AFRIMMA Fashion Show, AFRIMMA Pre-Party, and AFRIMMA Music Panel speaking engagement.

Askia’s victory was posted on Instagram on September 20th 2023 by AFRIMMA and it was indicated that the song which made her win this award was “Ngarma” a song in which Mr. Leo featured in. This award is seen to be her breakthrough after several failed victory after previous nominations. To think Mami Bakala beat other nominees like Nata from Sierra Leone, Femi One from Kenya, Eno Barony from Ghana. Rosa Ree from Tanzania, Feli Nuna from Ghana and Ami Yerewolo from Mali. She was really determined this year and her determination and confidence did not disappoint her.

On Askia’s Facebook handle, she posted “Good morning, my Askians. We won…. BEST FEMALE RAP ACT. Thank you guys for voting. This one is loud.”

Another very talented artist that nailed it at this award was US-based Cameroonian singer, Libianca who emerged with the “Best Female Central Africa Award.” This award just added to the list of other awards she has earned due to her song “People”.
