CAMEROON WELCOMES AFRICAN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP VERY SOON
Cameroon will be hosting the 2024 edition of the African Athletics Championships in Douala,Littoral region in June 2024. The historic decision was taken unanimously at the Confederation of African Athletics Council meeting held in Lusaka, Zambia, in April 2023.
After Mauritius in 2022, Douala, the economic capital of Cameroon, has been selected to host the 23rd edition of Africa’s premier athletics competition from 15th to 25th June 2024.
With athletes of African origin representing 40-45% of the world’s athletics elite, the championship will take place just one month before the Paris Olympics, scheduled for July-August 2024.
The Douala 2024 African Athletics Championship is expected to bring together the participation of 54 countries and more than 3,500 visitors, including athletes, administrators, medical staff, technical officials and journalists.
Cameroon was initially designated to host the 2022 African Athletics Championships in Douala, but was stripped of its organizing rights after delays in confirming the date proposed by the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA).
Cameroon’s previous opportunity to host this prestigious event would have marked the second time the country had hosted it. The first was in 1996, when the 10th edition was held from 13th to 16th June at the Yaoundé Omnisports Stadium.
The Reunification Stadium in Bepanda-Douala is seen as the ideal venue to participate in and witness the 23rd African Athletics Championships, promising an unforgettable experience for athletes, officials and spectators.
