“BETTER HALF” A UNIQUELY ROMANTIC MOVIE BY RUTH KADIRI

There is this saying that “When you truly love someone, age does not matter. Whether it is a difference of 2 years or 30 years. Love is love’’. Same thing that happens as Ruth Kadiri passes on a great message to her audience in this film “ Better Half’’ released this 2023. This Nigerian movie of length, 1hr 49 minutes. This film is seen to target those who feel love can’t go for a particular age group of people or the younger generation cannot be bold enough or courageous to fall in love with the older generation. This movie brings in themes of Love, determination, lies, protection, fear and much more.

Chidi Dike, a new actor in the Nollywood industry made his popularity in this movie ‘’ Better Half’’ where he acted a university student who falls in love with his Lecturer but cannot see it seem to tell her the truth.

In this film, Kanye (Chidi Dike) a young university student falls in love with his Lecturer and due to the fact he couldn’t open up to her, he creates a fake online persona called Kennedy who resides in the United States of America and claims to be older than  Sia in order to talk with his Lecturer. Fortunately, Sia (Uche Montana) falls madly in love with this online persona (Kennedy) and she cannot stay a day without chatting with her beloved boyfriend. This particular day Kanye’s (Chidi Dike) childhood friend Bella (Detola Jones) moves up to his car to try seducing him. He refused her advances and warned her but during this resistance process, he lost his phone and discovered it later on and got a new phone. Later on that day, Sia gave a test in her class and promised her students that the highest student will have lunch with her. Kanye now worked extra hard in order to be the student and he actually came out as the best student but when he went to have lunch with his lecturer, he was disappointed that Sia gave him a lunch box with snacks in it and he thought they will actually go out for lunch in a restaurant he finally left her office disappointed. By evening, Kanye called (using his fake persons name – Kennedy) Sia and she was not happy because she has been trying his line and it wasn’t going through. He apologized and asked his she got the money he sent her and she accepted. Sia has always had failed relationships and she held on so tight to this relationship because she knew he is “The One’’.

As time passes, Sia’s love for her online boyfriend keeps growing keeps growing. At a point, she confided to her friend Maria (Gloria Jemadefe) that she has had calls with her boyfriend but she doesn’t know why she doesn’t understand the video calls. Her sounds better on audio than video. She feels the voice doesn’t match with the face she sees but her friend comforted her and she ignored it. As times passes, Kennedy (fake online boyfriend) lavishes her with gifts. There was a time Kanye saw her waiting for her Uber and decided to drop her off but she refused and said he’ll accompany her to her Uber. Few days later, her fake online boyfriend (Kennedy) got her a brand new car and she was so happy and when she asked why, he said he doesn’t want her taking Ubers to school that she should own her own car. She was happy.

As time went, Kanye’s grand father a very rich entrepreneur told Kanye he is not happy with how he’s manipulating Sia and Kanye told his grand father that with time he will confess to Sia but that he wants to remain hidden. After several months, Kennedy sent a delivery person one evening to give Sia a gift and as she opened the door, she was surprised and told him she didn’t want any gift and Kennedy insisted that she is his woman so he needs to spoil her. He told her to open the small gift box and behold she saw a ring and was shocked. Kennedy proposed to Sia via phone and she accepted and was so happy then she showed her friend Maria who was happy with her. She began preparing for her upcoming wedding and Kennedy told her he will enter the country soon in order to bring his people to see her people. Fast forward to the day of the wedding, Kennedy was not there giving an excuse that his flight was delayed so he sent his grandfather to represent him at the traditional wedding. Sia did not have a problem with Kennedy’s absence. Everything went on well while on the other side, Kanye awaited his grand father and his new bride. While awaiting his bride, his friend Maria came to see him to inform him about their lecturers’s marriage but he showed a careless attitude to his friend and told her that she should leave his house. After she left, several minutes later his grand father and new bride drove into the compound.

 Sis came down from the car and was shocked to see Kanye and asked what he’s doing there. Kanye and his grandfather then explained the whole truth to Sia and she got mad and slapped Kanye due to the breaking news she heard. She broke into tears and ran out. Her friend Maria followed her and tried to comfort her. While this scene went on, Bella, Kanye’s friend saw everything and decided to go give the news to a media house so they spread the news.

Sia was broken that she got married to a child and the child is her student she went back to her house and was traumatised. Kanye tried talking to her but she won’t let him see her not only that, her picture was everywhere and she was now a laughing stock and couldn’t show her face at work. She even called her parents to return her brideprice but Kanye denied and said he won’t give up on her and told Sia’s parents to please give him a chance to prove his love for their daughter.

Sia later on fell sick and one day fainted. Kanye rushed her to his house and ensured good treatment be given to her. Sia got up and Kanye was so happy and tried to feed her because ever since she discovered she was married to Kanye, she didn’t put food in her mouth. After several days and Sia was better, she gave Kanye back his ring and left his house telling him to never call her or try to see her again.

Months passed and he respected but now on Sia’s side, she began missing Kanye and coincidentally Kanye came to see her and before he could talk Sia ran up to him and kissed him and confessed her love for him and from there on, she went to live with her husband and they went to school together as a couple though she went to work and Kanye to school. Bella was disgraced due to her jealousy and true love won this time around.
