The Indomitable Lions and Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana, has been named the ninth best goalkeeper in the world in 2023.

The CIES Football Observatory congratulates the Cameroon international player on his performances throughout the calendar year. André Onana, certainly has had a memorable twelve months.

The renowned goalkeeper, was recently brought in as Manchester United’s new goalkeeper. The new recruit replaces the huge boots of David De Gea, who has been at the club since 2011. Given the way Erik ten Hag wants his teams to play, André Onana fits perfectly into the system.

Onana did a fabulous job for Inter Milan last season. He was arguably the best goalkeeper in Serie A this season. The Cameroon international player stopped 76.1% of the shots he faced in Serie A this season, and also put in some outstanding performances in the Champions League. He has been a colossal presence at the back for the Nerazzurri and has produced 19 clean sheets in 38 appearances in all competitions for Inter Milan.

Onana is also extremely comfortable with the ball at his feet, often moving off his lines to clear the ball or even collect a pass. The Inter Milan goalkeeper also made the most saves (45) and kept the cleanest sheets (eight) in the Champions League last season.

The ranking in question was compiled by the CIES Football Observatory, an independent football organisation based in Switzerland, which regularly observes and analyses the performances of football players, presenting exclusive data and analysis on their numbers in competitions.

With this in mind, Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson Moraes was ranked first in terms of minutes and games played, interventions in matches and results achieved. The Brazilian goalkeeper topped the list ahead of Barcelona goalkeeper Marc Andre Ter Stegen and Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez.

The list also includes two other Premier League goalkeepers, with Newcastle’s Nick Pope in eighth place ahead of Manchester United’s Cameroonian goalkeeper André Onana, who was placed ninth in the ranking ahead of Rafael Monteiro, the keeper of Brazilian side Sao Paulo.
