AWILO LONGOMBA : A LEGEND IN SOUKOUS ENTERTAINMENT

Awilo Longomba, whose real name is “Louis Albert William Longomba”, is a Congolese songwriter, singer, composer, drummer, producer and dancer. He was born on May 5, 1962, in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire). Awilo Longomba is known for his energetic performances and his unique blend of soukous, ndombolo, and other African rhythms. Longomba comes from a musical family, with his father being a famous musician. His father, Vicky Longomba, was the famous lead singer and founder of “Tout Puissant OK Jazz” during the golden age of Congolese rumba.

He began his musical career in the late 1980s as a drummer for Viva la Musica, a band led by Papa Wemba. During his time with the band, he gained experience and exposure to different musical styles. While as a drummer, he had his real first taste of live performance on his first international tour in Europe and to Japan in 1985 and 1986.

In 1995, Awilo Longomba decided to pursue a solo career and released his debut album “Moto Pamba”.  The album was a huge success and established him as a prominent figure in African music. He followed up with several other successful albums, including “Coupé Bibamba” (1998) in collaboration with Jocelyne Bérouard, “Kafou Kafou” (2001), “Mondongo” (2004), “Super-Man” (2000), “Karolina” and many more beautiful tracks which further solidified his popularity.

Awilo Longomba’s music is characterized by its infectious beats, catchy melodies, and lively dance routines. His songs often celebrate African culture, love, and dance. He incorporates elements of traditional Congolese music with modern influences, creating a unique sound that appeals to audiences across Africa and beyond.

His talent received notoriety when Sony music requested a remix funk version of his “Coupé Bibamba” with James D-Train to be included in the compilation “Tribute to the Funk” in June 2003 and it became a summer hit. Awilo also performed at Zenith concert hall in Paris with other American artists (Jocelyn Brown, Anita Ward, Imagination…) who were part of the compilation.

Throughout his career, Awilo Longomba has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to African music. He has collaborated with various artists, both within Africa and internationally, including Jocelyne Bérouard, Yemi Alade,Psquare and many more artists . He released his third CD “Kafou Kafou” which got him recognised for his outstanding contribution to African music and received “Judges Special Awards” during the KORA 2001. His other album “Super Man” received the Best Soukous Entertainer Award in 2009.

He became the first Congolese artist to fill the Lagos Stadium with 120,000 attendees for three consecutive days. He also is the first Congolese artist to have performed in Săo Tomé and Principe, as well as the only Sub-Saharan African along with Miriam Makeba to have performed in Libya.

In addition to his music career, Longomba is also involved in philanthropic efforts. He has been an ambassador for various charitable organizations and has used his platform to raise awareness and support for causes such as education and healthcare in Africa.

Awilo Longomba continues to be a prominent figure in African music, with his music remaining popular and his performances continuing to captivate audiences. His influence can be seen in the success of many contemporary African artists who have been inspired by his unique style and stage presence. He remains an iconic figure in Congolese music.
